SOCHI, RUSSIA, 7 FEB 2103 – As the final touches are being put on the various courses in preparation for next week's freestyle ski and snowboard Olympic test event, organizers, builders, athletes, and fans the world over are marking today as the official one-year countdown to the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games.
Successful test events were held for alpine skiing in 2012, while just this past weekend the nordic athletes had their chance to head to the Krasnaya Polyana to check out what are being described as “perfect” cross-country and ski-jumping facilities. Come next Friday, February 15th, it will finally be the freestyle community's turn to see for ourselves the venue where everybody's hopes and dreams for next year are focused.
While the cancellation of the highly-anticipated slopestyle competition was a disappointment for everyone involved, organizers have redoubled their efforts on getting dialled in for the moguls, aerials, halfpipe, and ski cross events. The Olympic qualification period is now in full-swing, and being on-site at the venues where so much will be at stake in a year will no doubt hammer home the magnitude of what the athletes of the FIS Freestyle World Cup tour are striving for.
So this is it, folks. One year to go until the next incarnation of the greatest sporting event on earth, Sochi 2014. Start counting down.
